Job Description:
The Canadian Government Relations team leads contact between TD Bank Group and all orders of government in Canada. We advise and execute on advocacy, while complying with all lobbying rules in Canada. We coordinate across all business lines and corporate functions, to have a clear landscape view of the issues that matter most to TD and advocate for public policy outcomes that meet the public interest. The Government Relations team works closely with our Corporate and Public Affairs (CAPA) colleagues as well as business leaders and control functions to ensure that we understand the opportunities, risk and goals for TD in the public environment.
ROLE OVERVIEW, RESPONSIBILITIES, EXPERIENCE
This role will on advance the bank's public policy and government relations agenda.
Lead internal discussions with TD subject matter experts, business line leads and control functions about government policy matters that affect TD.
Take the lead on designing advocacy strategies that align to TD goals, while being aligned to the public interest.
Executing on advocacy strategies, as agreed with TD partners.
Build and maintain strong relationships with key members of the public service and political staff, while always representing TD.
Work closely with the rest of the Government Relations and Public Affairs team to ensure that the advocacy approach on one issue is aligned with the overall approach with governments, and that the federal, provincial and local priorities are appropriately calibrated.
Work closely with our Corporate and Public Affairs (CAPA) communications partners to ensure that TD's Government Relations activities are aligned to our brand, values and public positioning.
Continue to build a network of individuals in the public sector and public policy community that are Canadian thought leaders in areas of interest to the Bank.
Ability to navigate a large organization dealing with complex policy matters, while balancing a variety of interests.
Being the "face of TD" with the public sector on a variety of issues and representing TD values.
Strong communications skills, both verbally and written.
Position requires a proactive, industrious approach to driving an agenda, building and able to influence outcomes.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
Experience working in the public sector as an elected official, political advisor, public servant or regulator and has well-established credibility and trust with stakeholders.
Proven experience in Government Relations, public affairs or advocacy, and the ability to demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of how to build successful advocacy programs.
Specific expertise in financial sector public policy.
Stays one step ahead by being early to recognize new opportunities.
Is highly self-aware and can read the intentions and emotions of others to create a better outcome.
Has a strong network and will eagerly work to expand it.
QUALIFICATIONS/COMPETENCIES, ACCREDITATION
10 years+ experience in politics, government or public policy.
Graduate level education preferred, or candidates that have a technical designation(s) in addition to government experience.
Experience in financial services or large regulated/publicly traded company an asset.
Excellent judgment in dealing with sensitive issues and providing counsel to senior executives.
Bilingualism (English/French) an asset.
