Job Description:

We will help you realize your full potential and achieve your career goals. From mentorship and training programs to leadership development, you will receive everything you need to succeed.
Job Overview:
In this Counsel, Private Banking role, you will be the lead legal advisor to TD Wealth Private Banking (https://www.td.com/ca/en/investing/wealth/private-banking) , which provides tailored banking solutions to high-net-worth Canadians. Part of your practice will also include advising TD's retail business (the Canadian Personal Bank), wealth management business (TD Wealth), and trust company (The Canada Trust Company) on matters relating to trusts, estates, vulnerable clients, and customer escalations, as a member of the legal team that advises on these matters across the enterprise.
This is a unique opportunity to gain exposure to a wide breadth of TD's business while advising on engaging, customer-facing issues spanning multiple areas of law, including contracts, lending, financial regulation, consumer protection, trusts, estates, and powers of attorney.
The successful candidate should therefore be comfortable being a generalist who collaborates with lawyers from other specialties to provide sound and timely legal advice. At the same time, you will develop a sufficiently deep understanding of the business lines you support and the bodies of law relevant to them in order to fulfill the role of trusted advisor.
Job Accountabilities:
Provide strategic, practical, and timely legal advice to business teams, risk and control partners, and other internal stakeholders in connection with all matters relating to TD Wealth Private Banking
Draft and/or review customer agreements, disclosures, credit documentation, and marketing materials related to TD Wealth Private Banking
Provide legal advice on customer matters referred to the Legal Department (escalations, complaints, requests for advice, etc.)
Provide legal support, direction, and advice on customer transactions relating to high-net-worth individuals
Advise on the management of legal and reputational risk with respect to new business initiatives or changes to existing products and services
Advise on updates to TD Wealth Private Banking processes to support business initiatives while effectively managing risk
Build and maintain strong, collaborative working relationships within the Legal Department, with business teams, and with risk and control functions across various parts of the Bank
Job Requirements:
Licensed as a lawyer in Ontario
Minimum of 3 years of experience at a commercial law firm or in-house legal department that includes experience advising commercial clients on contractual, lending, or financial services matters (whether as part of a transactional, regulatory, or litigation practice)
Familiarity with financial services, such as through experience advising financial services firms, bankers, or wealth management professionals
Experience serving as lead counsel on matters and building and managing relationships with business partners
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to brief legal and business executives on complex issues in a clear, concise, and practical way
Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop strong working relationships with business partners, risk and control partners, and lawyers across the Legal Department
Sound judgment that equips you to provide prompt, pragmatic advice on ambiguous matters
Comfort being a generalist who can learn and apply principles from different areas of law, spot legal issues, and coordinate advice from other lawyers as needed
Experience with trusts, estates, and/or powers of attorney is an asset
