Department Overview

Job Description

The Valuation team is part of the Corporate Actuarial department. In the role, the candidate will partake in the main responsibilities of the team, including:

Quarterly Reserve Valuations

  • The responsibility is to establish actuarial provisions for all lines of business using appropriate assumptions and methods. The selection of techniques to determine unpaid claims requires a very good understanding of the business, including historical changes in terms of product offering and legislative reforms. Tools and techniques must be periodically reviewed, improved, and optimized to stay relevant for the specific circumstances of the different lines of business. Actuarial provisions must be calculated in accordance with current actuarial literature, legislation, and accounting standards.

Reporting

  • The responsibility relates to building meaningful reports to monitor the adequacy of actuarial provisions over time. Actual losses versus expected losses are monitored monthly.

  • The responsibility also relates to communicating and certifying the financial results with various business partners, including external auditors, AMF and OSFI. The appointed actuary report is produced, audited and peer reviewed yearly.

Governance/Miscellaneous

  • Implement risk mitigation, risk controls as well as processes, policies, and procedures for the team.

  • Coach, develop and inspire colleagues toward reaching their goals

Job Requirements

Professional Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Actuarial science or other quantitative area of study

  • Working towards obtaining Associateship with the Casualty Actuarial Society, Canadian Institute of Actuaries or equivalent

Analytical/technical Skills:

  • Stands out for his/her judgment and analytical mind

  • Has strong problem-solving skills

  • Recognized for his/her thoroughness and the quality of his/her work

  • Has work experience with MS Excel (VBA), programming languages (eg. R/SAS/Python)

Soft Skills:

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing. Bilingualism (English and French) is an asset for this role

  • Ability to work effectively during periods of stress

  • Ability to collaborate and build positive relationships with business partners

  • Autonomous and perseverant
